Session abstract: 

From Google DIY kits to Samsung Gear VR to Chrome WebVR support, Android is leading the way in making Virtual Reality less "virtual" and more real!  Building immersive worlds is more accessible than ever with SDKs like Cardboard and Oculus Mobile, and engines like Unity3D and Unreal ... but how do we Android developers get started? And what challenges should we expect to face?

These questions and more will be answered in this unique hands-on workshop by creating a simple VR game together. Using a VR Starter Kit we will supply - including a Google Cardboard for your Android Device - you will be able to follow along and learn how to:

  • Add VR into the game, run it on your device, and see why it's easier than making the game itself!

  • Craft experiences around the interactions and limitations unique to VR.

  • Move beyond off-the-shelf components and into your own code.

  • Distribute to other Android-based VR platforms such as Oculus Mobile and WebVR.

Plenty of TRON and Matrix jokes will be made along the way and you will come away excited and ready to build your own VR experiences to explore this new frontier!

UPDATE: To be prepared for the workshop ensure that you have Android Studio and Unity 5 installed on your system. We'll be holding an installation jam before the workshop to help get you setup.
